Bits & Pieces

By Kim J. Harmon

I know President George Bush has put the kibosh on human cloning, but I sure could have used three of me last Friday night.

There was a football game in New Milford at 7 pm (the annual Boot Trophy game), a girls’ soccer game at Bunnell at 7 pm (which is very nearly a blood feud between the two schools) and a girls’ swim meet against Pomperaug at 7 pm (the last team that has any shot of beating Newtown during the dual meet season).

Gosh – what to do?

Seeing as football is a once-a-week deal, I had to go to the football game.

I was glad I did, seeing as the Nighthawks won their first game and managed to hold on to The Boot for another year.

But I couldn’t help wondering what I was missing (I was missing another win for the soccer team and another win by the swim team) and I was happy I was able to get some periodic reports during the evening.

I would have liked to see the action, though. Don’t they have TIVO for that sort of thing?

Overheard on the sidelines of the Newtown-New Milford football game –

“If we don’t score a touchdown here, we’re gonna …”

– Head coach Ken Roberts to quarterback Josh Rouse as the Nighthawks prepared to return a punt

Cecily Tynan, a graduate of Newtown High School and now the head meteorologist at an ABC affiliate in Philadelphia, is running the Ironman in Hawaii this weekend. Joan and Robert Tynan, who live in town, will be joining their daughter (obviously, as spectators) for one of the most grueling event in all sports.

Wish Cecily some luck.

Andy Smith, a 2001 graduate of Newtown High School, has notched two points for the Ithaca College men’s soccer team this fall – both on assists. Smith (as of this writing) had appeared in 48 consecutive games, never missing a contest for the Bombers. At the time, the Bombers were 8-2-2 and sitting in first place in the Empire 8 Conference.

Since we’re on the subject of former NHS soccer players, Matt Pachniuk has helped lead Wheaton College to a 6-3-0 record this fall. Wheaton was 6-1-0 before dropping some tough games to regionally-ranked Plymouth State and MIT.

Then there is – of course – Mike Troy, who graduated in 2003 owning school and state scoring records. As a freshman with Fairfield University, he leads the team with five goals in 10 games. The Stags are 4-5-1 (as of this writing).
