Dr Nuland To Speak
SOUTHBURY â Dr Sherwin Nuland, author of Lost in America: A Journey with My Father will speak at a brunch from 10 am to noon on Sunday, November 2, at the Walzer Family Campus of The Federation: Jewish Communities of Western Connecticut at 444 Main Street North.
The public is invited to attend. Call chairpersons Irene Fishman 203-753-1430 or Penny Smith 775-3778 for reservations. There is an $18 couvert for this event, which is sponsored by the Waterbury Chapter of Hadassah.
Dr Nulandâs memoir recounts the difficult father-son relationship that so haunted his life that, he says, âHe walks with me through every day of my life, in that unsteady, faltering gait that so embarrassed me when I was a boy.â
Lost in America is at once about the Jewish immigrant experience in America, adolescent growing pains, dysfunctional family life, guilt, and a parent-child relationship whose legacy led to mental illness and eventually to understanding.
Dr Nuland graduated from Yale Medical School where he became chief resident, then performed and taught surgery for 30 years. Currently a retired surgeon and full-time writer, Dr Nuland and his wife live in Hamden. Among his previous books are How We Die and The Wisdom of the Body.
