Lights On! Celebrates

After-School ‘Connections’

By Larissa Lytwyn

Faces — and classrooms — were recently aglow during Education Connection’s annual Lights On! After School, a project sponsored by After School Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving all grade school children in US schools access to after-school programs by 2010.

About 40 Hawley students enjoyed a special afternoon of ice cream and recreation, including a scavenger hunt. “We do all kinds of things with them after school,” said Education Connection staff member Michael Cristiano. “They can do homework. We also provide snack time and supervised [recreational] activities, such as kickball.”

Mr Crisiano said that a lot of the Education Connection staff is made up of teachers, or simply kid-loving adults looking to supplement their income with a fun, rewarding part-time job.

Helping out at the Hawley event was 13-year-old Jacqui Kirol, whose younger sister is involved with the program. Jacqui said she also enjoyed Education Connection’s after-school programs growing up.

“I just love being here!” she said.

Some parents helped provide all the sundae trimmings, including M&Ms, chocolate chips, and rainbow sprinkles.

At Head O’ Meadow School, about 35 students eagerly awaited a similar treat — although this time the goodies consisted of munchkins and brownies. Using construction paper, crayons, and plenty of creativity, the children had prepared for the day by designing and coloring light bulbs. Handmade bracelets and other jewelry were also on display. Later, during the open house portion of the Head O’ Meadow event, their families would have the opportunity to admire the students’ handiwork.

“You know, Arnold Schwarzenegger began this program in California a few years ago,” said Education Connection staff member Geri Gould.

Currently, Governor-elect Schwarzenegger chairs the Lights On! After School program, a role he assumed in 2001.

“Every school does something a little bit different,” said Ms Gould. Students in Sandy Hook School’s after school program made a full-course Italian dinner for their families.

At Reed Intermediate School, Education Connection students enjoyed a series of guest speakers on the importance of after-school programs. Visitors included First Selectman Herb Rosenthal, State Representative Debralee Hovey, Newtown Youth Officer Dana Schubert, and some of the students’ working mothers, including Karen Keating.

“This program helps keep you safe,” said Ms Keating.

In addition to the speakers, students engaged in skits centering on the importance of after-school activities.

“We’re so lucky to have this program,” said Angela Holmes, a teacher at Reed Intermediate School.
