Newtown Greenery, Newtown High Schoolâs first of six Nighthawks Entrepreneurships, is offering a special fall clearance sale.
Large mums and asters are now $15; pansies and small mum plants are $3. All proceeds fund the high schoolâs greenery program.
âWe have about 60 students participate each year,â said teacher Kristin Violette. âThe program is open to juniors and seniors.â Certified in floral design, Ms Violette also holds a masterâs in technology and teaching certification in English.
âWe have about 15 students in the class right now,â she said. âItâs an elective under the schoolâs Fine and Applied Arts Department.â
Since Ms Violette began teaching the program five years ago, she implemented a floral design supplement. âIn the past, students have made corsages for dances,â she said. âRight now we make Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah centerpieces, among other projects.â
For Halloween, students are preparing unique combinations of orange and black carnations.
âA lot of our arrangements are featured at area establishments,â she said, âsuch as the centerpieces at My Place Restaurant.â
Newtown Greenery has also left a colorful mark on the grounds of Newtown High School.
Various regional distributors have supplied bulbs over the years. âItâs hard to have someone work with us, because weâre so small,â said Ms Violette. âWe have requests for 500 flowers, not thousands.â
Students also take turns running the Greeneryâs stand, located in Newtown High Schoolâs front lobby. âWhen they arenât there, we also help run it,â said secretary Marianne Corbo. Ms Corbo plans to pick up a pink mum plant for her daughterâs upcoming baby shower. âItâs a great program,â she said. âThe flowers just brighten everything up!â
Running the school greenhouse is George Bachman, who established the program about eight years ago. âWe all really enjoy it,â he said.
