Pastel Portraits Next SCAN Program
The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) has invited Joan Slocum to demonstrate painting a pastel portrait using a model at the next meeting of SCAN on Wednesday, October 22, at 1:30 pm. The demonstration will take place in the lower meeting room of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street in Newtown (at the flagpole). The public is invited to attend, free of charge.
Joan Slocum has been a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America since 1981. She is known throughout the Hudson Valley as both a respected teacher and an award-winning artist. Her pastels have been exhibited in many venues throughout the country including the National Arts Club in New York City.
Her portrait commissions range from politicians to âeveryman.â Her equestrian series, which cover events from Steeplechase to dressage, has generated great interest from the riding, raising and showing communities.
She has illustrated a historical book on the Shawangunk Valley and was published in Hsigun Shift, a Chinese art monthly.
She has studied with internationally known artists including Daniel Greene, Aaron Shiktler, Albert Handel and Joe Hing Lowe. During the summer she conducts workshops in landscape, still life and portraiture.
