Strides Breast Cancer Walk

 To Step Off On Sunday

WESTPORT –– More than 3,500 walkers –– including teams from the Newtown area –– are expected to take part in the American Cancer Society’s tenth anniversary Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Westport on Sunday, October 19.

 Since 1994 the Westport walk has raised $2.16 million for breast cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient support programs. This year, the five-mile walk along Sherwood Island State Park hopes to raise more than $300,000. All residents of Fairfield and Litchfield counties are welcome. Registration begins at 9 am and the walk officially begins at 11 am.

A local team is being organized by Judy Volpe of Avance Esthetiques Day Spa, 270-8911, and breast cancer survivor Bek Meyers also is seeking sponsors, 364-1783.

According to American Cancer Society statistics, every three minutes a woman in the United States learns she has breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women ages 40–55. An estimated 211,300 US women will develop breast cancer this year and approximately 40,200 will die from the disease this year. In Connecticut, 2,600 women will develop breast cancer this year, and some 500 will from breast cancer this year.

Flagship sponsors for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk include Gillette, Lorad – A Hologic Company, Purdue Pharma, and United States Surgical. Media sponsors are News 12 and Kool 96.7 FM. Additionally, hundreds of teams from businesses, schools, and community groups from around the region will participate.
