The second annual John Giorno Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 15, at Newtown High School. The tournament is in honor of John Giorno, a “good friend” of Newtown basketball, who succumbed to cancer last year.

Giorno was the vice-president of travel basketball, who did so much for the youth of Newtown and its basketball program. He worked tirelessly, behind the scenes, in support of park and recreation and travel programs.

Tournament competition is by age groups for both males and females. Divisions range from grades 3 and 4 through the 20-and-over age group. The format will be double elimination, so every team plays at least two games. Trophies are awarded for first and second place in each division. Each team should register four players.

This will be a fun filled and exciting tournament for all. It will be a great way to kick-off your 2003-04 basketball season, while supporting a very noble cause! In addition to the tournament at the high school, there will be knockout, foul shooting and half-court shooting contests with great prizes throughout the day at the Newtown Middle School.

More detailed information and registration forms will be made available at the Park & Recreation Department next week. Travel and park and rec basketball coaches will also distribute them at practice. Make sure to enter your team early because there is a limit on the number of teams that can be accommodated.

Proceeds from the tournament are used to support the family of John Giorno. Look for more 3-on-3 information over the upcoming weeks! Snacks and refreshments will be available. Raffles with exciting prizes will be held all during the tournament.
