When a group of local business owners approached the town for help in renewing Sandy Hook Center, they didnât get empty promises to do something. They got the kind of effort and the results that Herb and Joe are known for in the business community.
What is known as the Sandy Hook Streetscape project is the kind of prudent economic development that makes the most of existing commercial areas and encourages new investment. As such, it will enhance the quality of life for everyone in our community.
Where will the money come from? Joe and Herb, working with Community Development Director Liz Stocker, secured $475,000 in state grants, and support from the Housatonic Valley Council of Elected Officials for another $650,000 in federal grants. Cost to the taxpayers of Newtown? Just $150,000.
Who benefits? Of course, local business property owners in Sandy Hook win. But, more importantly, all Newtown taxpayers ââ homeowners and business owners alike ââ are the big winners when intelligently planned, high quality commercial rateables are added to the tax base. And, furthermore, the folks living in Sandy Hook are ensured that their much appreciated historic hamlet shopping and dining center will continue to survive and thrive.
No wonder this project enjoys so much support.
