Watershed Association Will Offer A Walking Tour Of Historic Georgetown

WILTON — The Norwalk River Watershed Association is hosting a walking history tour of Georgetown on Sunday, October 26, from 1 to 4 pm. Rain date will be Sunday, November 9, at the same time.

The tour will focus on the architectural, industrial, commercial, cultural, and environmental history of this special village that straddles the four towns of Redding, Ridgefield, Weston and Wilton. The tour will be led by former Redding resident Brent Colley, who maintains both a Redding history website (www.HistoryOfRedding.com) and also the site for Norwalk River Watershed Association (www.NorwalkRiver.org). Mr Colley’s family ties to Georgetown span several generations, and the extensive stories and research he has amassed on the area are detailed and filled with interesting anecdotes.

Among specific topics to be covered are the varied architecture, the Gilbert & Bennett Wire Mill, the Norwalk River, The Flood of ‘55, the village itself, and the proposed eco-history park at the junction of routes 57 and 107.

Participants should meet at Caraluzzi’s Supermarket parking lot, behind the Shell station at the junction of routes 7 and 107 in the Wilton/Georgetown area. The walking tour will start from there, and walking shoes are advised.

There is no charge for this program, but reservations are suggested. Last year the popular tour hosted over 60 attendees, so people are encouraged to make reservations early. For reservations or further information call Norwalk River Watershed Association at 203-846-8210 or Lillian Willis at 203-438-8653.
