Artificial Turf Forum Draws One Person

Are residents worried about the pending artificial turf installation at Tilson Field? Not if you gauge the concern by the number of people who attended an information forum October 14 hosted by the Parks & Recreation Department. One interested party arrived to learn more about the artificial, outdoor field surface. Bob Marusi, representing Newtown Youth Lacrosse, flipped through paperwork describing artificial turf, and listened as Assistant Director of Parks Carl Samuelson described the good and bad points of different types of turf.

What was his interest? “Four hundred kids and 800 adults are in my jurisdiction,” Mr Marusi said. He hoped to learn what he could about the recreation department’s decision to install the artificial field, anticipating questions from parents. He personally is confident with the choice. “Without a doubt I am satisfied with it,” he said.

Parks & Recreation Department Director Amy Mangold remarked on the one attendee, along with Health District Director Donna Culbert, who was invited. “I agree, it’s not a concern,” Ms Mangold said.

In past months officials approved a more than $700,000 appropriation to pay for a turf field. At the same time a Connecticut-based grass roots group raised concern regarding gases emitted by crumbled rubber tires used as under fill for artificial turf. After extensive reading and research regarding any testing done on the subject, including state health department reports, the Parks & Rec members saw that nothing conclusively points to health risks.
