Two Bicycles

Police report that on October 8, two children’s bicycles were found abandoned at the Trinity Episcopal Church property at 36 Main Street.

One bicycle is a blue Magna-brand vehicle with the model name “Hydro H2O.” The other bike is a pink Magna-brand vehicle with the model name “Adorable.”

Both of the found bicycles were turned over to police for safekeeping. The owners may claim the bicycles by contacting Sergeant Darlene Froehlich at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 426-5841.

Juvenile Drug Charge

On October 10, police reported they arrested a 16-year-old male juvenile offender at Newtown High School who was alleged to be in possession of less than four ounces of marijuana. After booking, the individual was released on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on October 24.

Criminal Mischief

Newtown Police are seeking information regarding a vandalism complaint lodged on October 15. According to the report, some time between 8:30 pm on October 11 and 8:20 am the following day, some person or persons painted or marked a garage door at 12 Jeremiah Road. Anyone with any details on the matter can contact the investigating officer, Officer John McCluskey, at 426-5841.

Jewelry Box Stolen

Sometime between 8 and 11 pm on September 30, police say a jewelry box containing jewelry was stolen from a vehicle parked near Super Stop & Shop store at 228 South Main Street. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call 426-5841.

Misuse Of Plate

Police on routine patrol on Sugar Street around 3:27 pm on October 14 took notice of a 1994 Saturn sedan operating without a front marker plate and pulled the vehicle over to investigate. The operator, Neneh Tumba, 31, of Soundview Avenue in Stratford, was subsequently arrested for failure to display a front marker plate, misuse of registration, and operating without insurance. He was processed and released on a $100 bond pending an October 28 court date.

Two Drivers Charged

Police say that at 7:33 am on October 15, April Vignone, 41, of Briarwood Lane was attempting to merge onto Main Street from a parked position when the 2008 Ford Explorer she was operating made contact with a southbound 2005 Chevrolet Equinox being operated by Christian Dahl, 42, of Silver Hill Drive in New Fairfield. During the investigation it was discovered that Dahl was carrying an expired driver’s license and he was cited for the violation. Vignone was given a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Rear End Bump

On October 10 at about 1:39 pm, Hilary Cayer, 47, of Elton Drive in Newington, was operating a 2007 Chevrolet Impala westbound on Wasserman Way, reportedly following behind Frank Sgammato, 22, of Settlers Lane, Sandy Hook. When the front vehicle slowed for traffic, police say Cayer hit the rear of the 2008 Honda Accord Sgammato was operating. No injuries were reported. Cayer was issued a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Rolling Vehicle

Newtown Police responded at 4:06 pm on October 4 to 32 Walnut Tree Hill Road on the report of a traffic collision. Upon arrival it was determined that a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt being operated by Marianne Zeifman, 76, of that address had rolled backward from the driveway into the roadway after the driver had parked. The vehicle hit the side of a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am being operated by Phyllis Estella Hogan, 79, of Edgewater, Fla. Damage to both vehicles was minor and no injuries were sustained. Zeifman was issued a written warning for unsafe movement of her vehicle.

Honda Towed

Megan Matthews Ohare, of Megans Circle, Newtown, was traveling north on South Main Street in a 2005 Honda Civic at about 9:53 am on October 11, when police say she failed to stop for slowing traffic. According to the report, the Honda hit the rear of a 2007 Toyota Sequoia being operated by Maureen Bowler, 45, of Red Barn Road in Monroe. The Honda sustained front end damage and was towed from the scene. No injuries were reported; Ohare was issued a written warning for failure to drive a safe distance apart.

Ford Vs Saturn

Police say that at about 8:42 pm on October 11, Jason A. Rivera, 31 of Narragansett Trail, Sandy Hook, was attempting to enter Route 34 from a driveway at 206 Berkshire Road, when the 2007 Ford pickup he was driving was hit broadside by Steve Karolczuk, 26, of Berkshire Road in Brookfield. Both the 2007 Saturn Ion Karolczuk was operating and the pickup truck sustained damage to the extent both were towed from the scene. Karolczuk and a passenger, Cherrine Short, 18, of Elm Street, New Milford, were transported to the hospital by ambulance crews after complaining of injuries. A third passenger in the Saturn was uninjured. Rivera was subsequently cited for failure to grant the right of way.

Newtown Assist

The State Police reported that at about 12:19 am on October 13, an unidentified off-duty Newtown police officer heading home from work notified the Southbury barracks that he was observing a possible drunk driver traveling eastbound on I-84 in the area of Exit 11. Troopers tracked and intercepted the vehicle in question in Middlebury and subsequently arrested the driver, Jose Vicente Farez, 37, of Green Street in Middletown. He was charged with DWI, failure to drive in the proper lane, and operating without a license. Farez was held at Troop A on a $500 bond pending arraignment.

Foot Slipped

Kevin Schulz, 30, was reportedly waiting at a red light on the Exit 11 off ramp to I-84 at about 6:53 am on October 15, when State Police say the driver’s foot slipped off the brake causing his 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee to bump the rear of a 2000 Honda Civic being operated by Victor Santos of Phoenix Avenue in Naugatuck. The incident resulted in what police described as a minor scrape on the Honda’s rear bumper. No charges were reported.

Deer Strike

Newtown Police responded to the area of 108 Mt Pleasant Road around 6:11 am on October 15 following a report of a traffic incident. Upon arrival officers reported that a 2008 Honda Civic being operated by Walter Murphy, 52, of Meadow Road came in contact with a deer that entered the westbound lane causing damage to the vehicles driver’s side. No injuries were reported and no charges were filed. The vehicle remained drivable.

Charges Filed

Police say they pulled over Jose Valetin, 33, of South Street, Danbury, around 3:07 pm on October 14 after clocking him traveling too fast for conditions near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Pearl Street. Upon investigation, it was determined that the driver was operating with a suspended license and could show no proof of minimum insurance coverage. Valetin was arrested on those three offenses, processed and subsequently released on a $100 bond pending an October 28 court date.

Skid Into Trees

State Police said at approximately 2:12 pm on October 12, Maryellen McMillen, 63, of Harrisburg, Penn., was traveling eastbound on I-84 in Newtown in her 2003 Lexus when she swerved to avoid an animal in the roadway. Police say the evasive maneuver cause her to lose control of the vehicle, striking some small trees by the roadway. No injuries were reported, but the vehicle had to be towed from the scene.

Drug Arrest

On October 10, State Police reported pulling over Coty S. Pennywell, 22, of Eldred Road in New Fairfield, who was speeding on I-84 in Newtown. After a brief investigation, a subsequent search of the vehicle developed a quantity of suspected marijuana. Pennywell was charged with possession, unauthorized sale of marijuana, operating with a license suspended or revoked, and speeding. He was processed at Troop A and released with an October 27 court date.
