‘J.P. MORGAN TO HENRY CLAY FRICK’ WILL OPEN AT FRICK ART NOV. 10

avv/gs set 10/18 #716414

PITTSBURGH, PENN. — “From J.P. Morgan to Henry Clay Frick” will be on view November 10–February 3 at The Frick Art Museum.

The great American financier J. Pierpont Morgan (1837–1913), like Henry Clay Frick (1849–1919), was one of the nation’s preeminent art collectors and cultural benefactors. Although Morgan was slightly older than Frick, the two collectors simultaneously developed renowned collections, which after their deaths were transformed into public institutions.

In a period of ambitious collecting, and in tandem with the construction of his New York residence, Henry Clay Frick acquired many fine decorative art pieces from the Morgan estate. These purchases included Eighteenth Century French furniture, Chinese porcelains and a large group of Renaissance and Baroque bronzes. Formerly associated with J.P. Morgan, these works have now been absorbed into the collections of the Frick institutions and some have remained with family.

This exhibition will examine a selection of these acquisitions as a group and display them together for the first time. “From J.P. Morgan to Henry Clay Frick” will trace parallel collecting interest, and the idea of collections as markers of identity and reflections of taste.

The museum is at 7227 Reynolds Street. For more information, www.frickart.org or 412-371-0600.
