Sideswiped vehicle

Newtown police report Stanley Pachica, 40, of Bristol, operating a 2012 Honda Civic EX, was traveling southbound on Berkshire Road negotiating a right curve on September 29, following a 2015 Chevrolet Trax operated by Julia Mole, 23, of Lanesborough, Mass. Mole’s vehicle reduced speed and attempted to go around a third vehicle uninvolved in the accident that was making a left turn onto Pole Bridge Road. Pachica’s vehicle did not reduce its speed, swerved to the left and in the process, his vehicle sideswiped the driver’s side of Mole’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Pachica was issued a verbal warning for following too closely.

Broken Mirror

Newtown police report Jeffrey Young, 35, of Southbury, operating a 2015 Elgin Sweeper owned by the Town of Newtown, was traveling northbound on Brushy Hill Road on October 1. Timothy Flynn, 54, of Newtown, was operating a 2003 Mitsubishi FG649 southbound on Brushy Hill Road. As the vehicles passed each other, the passenger side mirror of Young’s vehicle made contact with the rear driver side of Flynn’s vehicle, causing minor damage to the Sweeper.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken.

Drove Two Miles After Hitting Guard Posts

Newtown police report Mohuiuddin Khan, 71, of Danbury, operating a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan SE owned by Edadvance of Litchfield, on October 4 was traveling north on South Main Street carrying a school student when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the road for unknown reasons. The van impacted five wood guard posts and continued approximately two miles before it stopped on South Main Street near Borough Lane.

There were no injuries.

Khan was issued an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Delivery Truck Slides Off Driveway

Newtown police report Malik Massey, 23, of Bridgeport, was operating an Amazon delivery truck owned by Budget Truck Rental on October 4. Massey was attempting to pull the truck into a driveway on Patricia Lane when it hit the wooden fence along the edge of the driveway. Massey stated he was attempting to deliver a package to the address when the van slipped off the driveway on the right due to the rainy conditions and the driveway being wet. He said the van slid down part of the driveway, hitting the fence along the way, and became stuck.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken.

Four-Car Collision

Newtown police report Annette Marsillio-Demoura, 50, of Southbury, operating a 2018 BMW X1 Xdrive28i, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road on October 4, and stopped in the roadway for a school bus traveling westbound with its flashing stop lights illuminated. Nancy Depietro, 44, of Waterbury, operating a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, stopped in the roadway behind Marsillio-Demoura’s vehicle. Juan Fajardo, 28, of Danbury, operating a 2003 GMC Savana G3500, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road was traveling behind a 2013 Nissan Altima 2.5s/sv/si operated by Frank Presti, 45, of Danbury, and as Presti stopped his vehicle behind Dipietro’s vehicle, Fajardo was unable to stop in time and the front bumper of his vehicle collided with the rear bumper of Presti’s vehicle.

The collision caused the front bumper of Presti’s vehicle into the rear bumper of Dipietro’s vehicle, which in turn caused the front bumper of Dipietro’s vehicle to collide with the rear bumper of Marsillio-Demoura’s vehicle.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps provided evaluations to each of the drivers and a passenger. All individuals declined transport. Fajardo’s vehicle and Presti’s vehicle were towed by Hilario’s Towing due to disabling damage.

Sandy Hook and Botsford fire companies also responded to the scene.

Fajardo was issued an infraction for operating a motor vehicle without a license and following too closely resulting in a motor vehicle accident.

Passed On Right

Newtown police report Jennifer Hope, 42, of Ridgefield, operating a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek Limited, was traveling northbound on Wasserman Way near the commuter lot on October 6. Nicholas Middendorf, 30, of Oakville, operating a 2015 Honda Civic EX, was traveling northbound on Wasserman Way, also near the commuter lot. Middendorf attempted to make a right turn into the commuter lot, and Hope attempted to pass Middendorf’s vehicle on the right, causing the front of Hope’s vehicle to strike the passenger side of Middendorf’s vehicle.

Both vehicles suffered minor damage. No injuries were reported.

Hope received a written warning for passing on the right.

Struck Car Backing Out Of Parking Spot

Newtown police report Marjorie Howgego, 52, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Subaru Forester, was parked in the parking lot of Caraluzzi’s, 5 Queen Street, pulled in facing westbound on October 7. Mary Bouton, 30, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2014 Nissan Rogue, was parked in the lot, backed in facing westbound. Bouton’s vehicle began to travel westbound from its parking stall and went to make a right turn into the driveway between the aisles in the northwest direction. As Howgego’s vehicle began to reverse eastbound from its parking stall into the driveway, the driver’s side rear of her vehicle struck the driver side rear of Bouton’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken.

Arrested for DUI

Newtown police report Hilario Cardozo-Hernandez, 34, of Newtown, was stopped by Newtown police while traveling on Mt Pleasant Road on October 8. After a brief investigation, Cardozo-Hernandez was arrested and charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to drive upon the right and making an improper turn with no turn signal.

Cardozo-Hernandez was released on a promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on October 21.

Failure To Drive Right

Newtown police report Bruce Rhodes, 64, of Litchfield, operating a 2014 Jeep Patriot Limited, was traveling northbound on Main Street on October 8. Chhunse Taing, 40, of Bethel, operating a 2016 Subaru WRX STI Limited, was traveling southbound on Main Street. Rhodes’ vehicle crossed the double yellow centerline and the left side of his vehicle collided with the left side of Taing’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Rhodes was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive right.

Suspended Driver Arrested For DUI

Newtown police report Keri Cordio, 38, of Newtown, was arrested October 9 on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension and illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. She was released on a $500 bond with a court date of October 21.

Failure To Grant Right Of Way

Newtown police report Herman Cole, 66, of Oxford, operating a 2015 Kia Forte SX, was traveling eastbound on Sherman Street and stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with Berkshire Road on October 9. James Shea, 23, of Shelton, operating a 2011 Volkswagon Jetta SE, was traveling southbound on Berkshire Road and negotiating a right curve.

Cole’s vehicle attempted to make a right turn onto Berkshire Road and Shea’s vehicle sideswiped his vehicle in the process.

No injuries were reported.

Cole was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Struck Utility Pole

Newtown police report Luke Kimball, 26, of Newtown, operating a 2014 Ford F150 was traveling northbound on Swamp Road and negotiating a left curve on October 11. Kimball’s vehicle ran off the roadway to the right and in the process struck an Eversource utility pole, knocking the transformer down.

No injuries were reported.

Kimball was issued an infraction for operating a motor vehicle while using a handheld mobile telephone and failure to drive in the proper lane.

Car Hits Tractor

Newtown police report Charles Ferris III, 83, of Newtown, operating a 1966 John Deere 4010 2T tractor towing an LNH Industrial H7220 trailer, was traveling northbound on Head of Meadow Road on October 12. Ferris stopped at the stop sign on Head of Meadow. Ferris said that he did not see anyone coming east or west on Sugar Street, so he turned left onto Sugar Street. James Gulalo, 72, of Newtown, operating a 2009 Infiniti G37 AWD, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street near Sugar Lane. Gulalo stated that when he came around the right turn he observed the tractor. He attempted to stop, locking up his brakes, but was unable to stop in time.

Gulalo’s vehicle sustained heavy front end damage. Ferris’s tractor sustained moderate left rear tire and axle damage.

Gulalo sustained minor injuries.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Hook & Ladder firefighters responded to the crash.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene due to damage.

Ferris was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.
