12 INTRO

Newtown Reds 10, Newtown Blue 8 – Trailing 8-3 after three innings, the Reds bounced back with seven runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to earn the victory. In the fourth, Nicky Sajovic and Michael Allwein singled. Sajovic scored on an RBI groundout by Ryan Daignault, and Allwein crossed the plate on an error to reduce the deficit to 8-5. In the fifth, Michael Scharfenberg walked, John Lebinski singled and Allwein drove them home with a clutch, line-drive single to right field. The Reds tied the game in the sixth when Daignault, who had walked, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Kyle Wilcox walked, stole second and third and scored the tie-breaking run on an error. Scharfenberg reached first on the error and was driven home for the insurance run when Sajovic ripped a clutch single. Sajovic and Allwein finished the game with two hits each. Newtown Blue scored six third-inning runs. Mike Koch singled to drive in David Gerics and later scored on an error. Erik Sutton smashed a two-RBI double to right field, Jeff Grasso knocked in a run with a single and Michael Lengel scored on an error. Reds pitchers Scharfenberg, John Lebinski and Jon Hull shut out Newtown Blue during the final four innings.

Newtown Reds 10, Woodbury 3 – The Reds broke up a tight 3-3 game, scoring six fourth-inning runs. Ben Stoller drilled a key, bases-loaded single to right center to knock in Eric Terhaar and Michael Allwein. After John Lebinski walked, Mike Scharfenberg doubled with a blast over the centerfielder’s head to score Stoller and Lebinski. John Hampford grounded a single up the middle to bring Scharfenberg home. Kevin Shpunt and Ryan Daignault also had RBI singles, and Kyle Wilcox and Richie Sandler drove in runs with groundouts. Reds pitchers Sandler, Wilcox and Daignault shut the door on Middlebury after the third inning, combining for four shutout innings. They were aided by centerfielder Nicki Sajovic, who grabbed a fly ball and threw to shortstop Jon Hull for a double play.

Newtown Reds 18, Middlebury 3 – The Reds’ bats were smoking, clobbering 12 hits over four innings. The game ended when the mercy rule was invoked after the top of the fifth inning. Four Newtown players – Richie Sandler, Ryan Daignault, Nicky Sajovic and Mike Scharfenberg – had two hits each. Sandler whacked two monstrous doubles over the left fielder’s head in the opening two innings, knocking in three runs. Kyle Wilcox also had three RBIs, and Daignault drove in two runs. Other runs were driven in by Scharfenberg, Sajovic, Jon Hull, Ben Stoller, John Hampford and John Lebinski. Hull made the defensive play of the game, sprinting off the pitcher’s mound and diving to catch a foul pop on the third base side.

Newtown Lightning 22, New Fairfield 2 – Stephen Brittin, Michael Parker and Zach Aumueller each had a home run and a triple and combined for 12 RBI to lead the offense. Matthew Ingwersen, Owen Samson, Matthew Stewart, Michael Ziluck, Trevor Palmer and Matt St. Jean all had hits and combined for eight RBI. Patrick Berger and Jamie Cochrane smacked a triples and Declan Sullivan and Pete Clifford had singles.

Newtown Bombers 10, Newtown (#5) 7 – Nick Randle and Joe Duero had two hits apiece and Joey Carrino delivered a two out, bases loaded double in the sixth inning to give the Bombers a three-run cushion. For Newtown #5, Sam Czel laced a bases loaded double and Matt Gerics tripled and scored two runs.

Monroe 16, Newtown Bombers 1 – The Bombers suffered their second defeat of the season to a tough Monroe team. Monroe was patient at the plate and ended up drawing 13 walks. They also received many clutch hits. For the Bombers, Joe Duero continued his hot hitting with two hits and Joey Carrino knocked in the lone Bomber run with a second inning double.

Newtown Bombers 19, Brookfield (#2) 8 – David Matthews led the Bombers by hitting for the cycle, driving in six runs and scoring three times. Matthews was also dominate on the mound striking out all six batters he faced. Jack Procaccini pitched in with three hits and three runs scored. Joe Duero, Austin Martinez and Richard Ciamarra combine for six hits and five runs scored. The Bombers completed the regular season with a 13 and 2 record.

Newtown Gladiators 25, Southbury 5 – Austin Huffman hammered out four hits to lead the Gladiators over Southbury.  Luke Rustici and Alex Klang each collected two hits, with Klang belting a triple, and Alex Daignault reached base and scored four times to round out the offense. Defensively, Rustici struck out six batters in two innings of work while Spencer Johnson made two put outs and struck out two batters in one inning of work.

Newtown Gladiators 15, New Fairfield 2 – Glen Damota collected two hits and Alex Klang added a double to lead the Gladiator offense. Brian Kerins, Trevor Lopez, and Austin Huffman each chipped in with a base hit and scored two runs apiece.
