NHS Girls' Soccer Team Blanks Bethel In SWC Tournament Quarterfinals
Newtown High School's girls' soccer team, the No. 2 seed in the South-West Conference Tournament, did all of its damage in the second half en route to a 3-0 win over visiting and No. 7 seed Bethel in the October 21 quarterfinals.
All three Nighthawk goal scorers are freshmen. Delia Stango broke the deadlock early in the second half, Makenzie Fregoe scored an insurance tally with 6:08 remaining, and Olivia Fernandes scored with only 33 seconds left.
With the win, the Nighthawks will host No. 3 Pomperaug of Southbury in the Thursday, October 23, semifinals at 6 pm. The winner advances to face either top seed Notre Dame Prep of Fairfield or No. 4 Masuk of Monroe in the championship game Sunday, October 26, at Western Connecticut State University starting at 6:30 pm.
