Hebert, Cebry Lead The
Way For 89ers
Dan Hebert and Andrew Cebry scored the touchdowns that lifted the 89ers to a narrow 13-7 win over Brookfield last weekend.
First, Hebert scored on a quarterback keeper and picked up the extra point himself on a run to give the 89ers a 7-0 lead. Some fine running from Michael Lord and Max Lopez set up the TD. Meanwhile, Justin Spath, Will Fletcher and Michael Allwein picked up Brookfield fumbles to spark the defense. Hebert made an interception while Kory Kling, Michael LoBosco and Patrick Cappozziello made some big tackles.
In the fourth quarter, with score tied 7-7, the 89ers had the ball with less than a minute to play. After two plays picked up minimal yardage, Hebert pitched to Cebry, who rambled 50 yards for the winning touchdown.
The win came a week after the 89ers dominated New Fairfield, 19-0. The locals pounded the ball inside the tackles and picked up better than 300 yards on the ground. Cebry, Hebert and Lord all scored touchdowns while Pat Mullins, Josh Villa, Matt Vavrek, Mike Sharpe, Tom Bauer and Kyler Harmeling made it all possible with great blocking up front.
Junior Pee Wees Fall
To Brookfield
A sloppy field and a touchdown on a fake punt â that is the tale of the Junior Pee Wees and their 6-0 loss to Brookfield last weekend.
Both teams showed their defensive muscle, holding each otherâs offense from scoring. Newtown had its chances, penetrating into the red zone three times during the game, but a stingy Bobcat defense kept the locals out of the end zone.
The defense came up with two turnovers, one on an interception by Sean Ross and the other on a fumble recovery by Andrew Seymour.
Newtownâs best chance of scoring came early in the fourth quarter when they had a fourth and four on the Brookfield 15. The JPWs were unable to convert the first down to keep the drive alive.
Once again, Max Nacewicz had a busy day on both sides of line, with offensive contributions from Mitch Udiskey and Shane Wurtz. On defense, Andrew Murphy and Tyler Reszoly had good games.
Pee Wees Pummel
Brookfield, 26-8
Kurt Nacewicz, Kyle âOCâ OâConnor, Kevin âLegsâ Canavan and Zach âThe Dentinatorâ Dent all scored touchdowns to lead the Pee Wees to a convincing 26-8 win over Brookfield last weekend.
It was the defensive stops of Brendan Blawie, OâConnell and Jamie Vavrek (who picked up a fumble) that set the stage for the first touchdown in the first half. Vavrek tossed a 24-yard scoring strike to Nacewicz to put the Pee Wees on top 6-0.
A hit by Canavan on the ensuing kickoff set the stage for some sparkling defense. OâConnell, Tim Wilmott and OâDonnell had stops to shut down Brookfield, which was forced to turn the ball over on downs. Although Dana âThe Driverâ Hansen, Tucker âKCâ Schmidt and OâConner ran the ball well, a penalty on a huge run by Canavan stopped the Pee Wees cold.
But OâConnor opened the second half by returning a punt 60 yards for a score â thanks to the blocks but Deakin, Nicky âBonesâ Tarantino, Poeltl and Matt Jones. Nacewicz added a two-point kick to put the Pee Wees ahead 14-0.
A sack by Jones and tackles by Lewis Thomson and Deakin forced another Brookfield punt. Kevin Brown, Mike âThe Animalâ Hadgraft and Hansen blocked well and a pancake hit by AJ Ritchie set up a 59-yard TD run by Canavan that put the Pee Wees ahead 20-0.
Brookfield scored a touchdown to cut into the lead, but Tarantino got the Pee Wees moving again by picking up 47 yards on a pair of carries. Dent then scored the final touchdown behind the blocking of Mike Kearns, Eric McCabe, Tyler Davenport, Mike Frederic, James Sharpe, Dylan Huebner, David Hutchinson and Jeremy Channel.
Junior Midgets Blank
Brookfield, 18-0
Jake Devellis scored a pair of touchdowns and Collin Babb age added another to lead the Junior Midgets to an 18-0 win over Brookfield on a wet and sloppy (what else is new?) Sunday at Taylor Field in Newtown.
The Junior Midgets got moving right away. After the opening kick, Zach Conger picked up some yardage on the ground while Brendan Martin carried the ball around the left end for about 10 yards and a first down. Despite a penalty, the Nighthawks moved the ball to the Brookfield 11 while utilizing the running of Martin, Conger, Mitch Ruins, and Devellis.
On the 10th play of the drive, Devellis took the ball from Martin on a counter and cut up field for the score to give the âHawks a 6-0 lead.
Ben Collins knocked down a pass on the ensuing Brookfield possession to give the âHawks the ball in Brookfield territory. The locals moved the ball to the six, mostly on the running of Dan Curtis (who rushed for 27 yards). Even though the offense sputtered and was forced to give up the ball, four plays later the Bobcats were punting from their end zone. Devellis caught the punt in the air at the Brookfield 18 and returned it for a TD to put the âHawks up 12-0.
In the second half, the Newtown defense continued to dominate and held Brookfield on its first possession. The âHawks got the ball back on the Brookfield 40 and started moving as Kenton Lord pounded the ball up the middle for nine yards on three plays. An offside penalty on Brookfield gave the Nighthawks a first down and two plays later Collin Babb age went 26 yards around the right end for another Newtown touchdown.
The rest of the game was dominated by the Nighthawk defense. Mike Orofino and Mike Rodriquez both came up with big fumble recoveries. On offense, Newtown utilized eight running backs and two QBs, including Mark Scheunemann, Cody Marus, Oberstadt, Conger, Rucinski, DeVellis, Lord, Curtis, Martin, and Babbage to rush for 168 yards on 28 carries.
The Junior Midgets improved to 5-1-1, which could earn them a home game in the first round of the CVL playoffs if they win their final regular season game against Aspetuck.
Midgets Drop Close One
To Brookfield
Matt Boland scored a touchdown, but it wasnât quite enough as the Midgets dropped a 13-8 decision to Brookfield last weekend.
Despite a solid defensive effort in the first period by Will Mahony, Ryan Manning and Erik Dreher, Brookfield moved down the field and scored the initial touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. While the offense was unable to move the ball, the defense of Matt Mascolo, Tyler Tarantino, Conor Martin and Connor McNamara stopped Brookfield cold.
Mahony then stripped the ball and returned it to the Brookfield 40, setting up the Nighthawksâ only score. Dan DeLaVega ran the ball well before Boland took it and pushed it into the end zone for the touchdown, trimming the Brookfield lead to 7-6.
The âHawks had a break when Dreher recovered a fumbled punt. But after moving the ball to the Brookfield six (on a pass from Kris Kling to Martin), the âHawks fumbled the opportunity away. The defense kept the Bobcats there, however, as Lucas Vendel and Dreher made big stops to force a punt.
Punting from inside the end zone, the Brookfield punter mishandled the snap and had to cover the ball, allowing Newtown to score a safety and take an 8-7 lead to end the first half. In the second half, it appeared as if the âHawks would hold on to that lead as Eric Puffer, Mascolo, Pat McNulty and Alex Dahlmeyer (fumble recovery) made some fine defensive plays.
But the âHawks were unable to score further, despite the efforts of Brett Mauro (blocking) and Kurt Koloniaris (fumble recovery). Brookfield scored the go-ahead touchdown soon after, handing the Midgets their third loss of the season.
