Young Adults
*Teen Read Week continues until Sunday, October 26. Join the national vote for Teensâ Top Ten favorite books online at www.ala.org/TeenRead. Thereâs also a great display with a list of this yearâs nominees in the libraryâs Young Adult area.
*Preparations for the Young Adult Poetry Reading Night  â Friday, November 7 â are in full swing. All Newtown students in grades 6-12 are encouraged to sign up. Poems must be submitted by Wednesday, October 29.
Students may also attend a workshop from 3 to 4:30 on October 29 with Liz Arneth, who will help participants write and refine their work. Original work is encouraged, but participants may also read a favorite poem written by someone else. Please register at the Main Floor Circulation Desk of the C.H. Booth Library, or call 426-4533. *Native Americans Program: Learn more about Native Americans with Matthew Hoyt of the Audubon Society on Saturday, November 1, at 1 pm. The program promises to be fun, educational, and a great way to learn some interesting information about local tribes of Connecticut. The program is suitable for children 5 and up.
*Music at the Library: On Saturday, November 8, at 2 pm, local author Ryan SanAngelou will be at the library with a musical program, sharing his delightful tale of âSpaghetti Eddie.â A huge fan of creativity and the power of imagination, Mr SanAngelou uses song writing and poetry as a way to reach young children.
*Festive Stamp Art: Students in grades 6 and up are invited to join us for a Winter & Festive Stamp Art Workshop with Barbara Shohet on Thursday, November 13. The workshop will run from 4 to 6 pm. There is a $5 supply fee and space is limited to 15 participants, but everyone will learn to make a gift bag or box, greeting cards and stationery portfolio gifts for yourself. On View At The Library
*An exhibition of art by the Newtown-based Gisela is on view until October 24. The show offers a compilation of works spanning the artistâs 25-year career including works in graphite, oil, pen and ink, marker and pastels.
*New Fairfield resident and porcelain expert Jean Mann is presenting a selection of porcelains and miniatures from her personal collection on the libraryâs main floor through November 23.
Adult Programs
*Book Talks: Itâs always interesting to discuss a book with a group, so come join one of the libraryâs ongoing book groups for some great conversation and lively discussion. New members are always welcome. Groups will be discussing a variety of great books in October. Stop by or call the library for the schedule.
*Alliance Française Program: Alliance Francaise of Northwestern Connecticut will sponsor a screening of the film Conte dâEte, which is in French with English subtitles, on Sunday, October 26, at 2 pm. A discussion will follow the film.
*Travel Programs: Dr Milton and Wendy Clark â a/k/a The Intrepid Travelers â will return to the library for their second program this month on October 29. Join the Clarks on Wednesday at 7:30 pm for âIrian Jaya: Stone Age Cultures in The Wildest Half of New Guinea.â
*Blood Pressure Screenings: Ashlar of Newtown will sponsor its next free blood pressure screening on Wednesday, October 29, from 10 am to noon, in the libraryâs Genealogy Room. Appointments are not necessary. The screenings are done by a registered nurse, who also has related health information available.
*Genealogy Club: The Genealogy Club meets the second Wednesday of every month at 7 pm. Whether youâre just beginning in your search or an old pro this club is for you. The groupâs next meeting will be November 12.
*Favorite Patriotic Women: Patty Carver will entertain us with a one woman show featuring some of our favorite ladies in history including Amelia Earhart, Betsy Ross and Elizabeth Cady Stanton on Thursday, November 13, at 7 pm. This program is laced with history and loaded with music so if you enjoyed The Victorian Lady when she last visited the library this program is for you.
*Computer Classes: Dan Tannenbaum will leading an introductory computer class on Saturday, November 8, from 9 am to noon, and an intermediate class on Saturday, November 15, also from 9 am to noon. Participants need to sign up at the circulation desk for the classes and a $10 supply fee is charged for the intermediate class.
*Entertainment Books Are Here: The 2004 Entertainment Books, filled with discount coupons for area attractions, restaurants, etc, have arrived and are available for $22. You may also order books for other areas of the country. A great gift idea!
