Association Continues To Raise Pollution Awareness
The Pootatuck Watershed Association, Inc (PWA) continues its townwide program to mark storm drains as volunteers affix four-inch-diameter markers with the PWA logo and the message âDonât Polluteâ¦.Drains to Waterways.â The blue and green markers are expected to last 30 years or more.
A combination of volunteers from the PWA, Newtown High School Ecology Club, town staff, interns, and others have been involved with marker placement. The project was launched during Newtownâs 2008 Earth Day celebration with help from Ecology Club volunteers who placed markers on drains around Queen Street and area parking lots.
âThe Pootatuck Watershed Association commends the Town of Newtown, our volunteers, Rivers Alliance, and all those who cooperated in this project,â said James Belden, the president of PWA. âStorm water contamination of our waterways, with its damage to aquatic habitat and possibly our own drinking water supply, is one of the greatest threats to clean water. Public awareness is a crucial component in protecting these waterways and their inhabitants, and we look forward to continuing this work and ensuring clean water for the benefit of wildlife and people.â
In order to study water quality conditions, the PWA and its partners continue water sampling, macroinvertebrate sampling and temperature monitoring at sites throughout Newtown. Sampling and retrieval of thermographs resumed this month.
Volunteers who wish to participate or to observe the training and sampling should contact the PWA at 426-6538 or PO Box 3303, Newtown CT 06470. The project is funded in part by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection through a United States Environmental Protection Agency Clean Water Act Section 319 Nonpoint Source Grant in conjunction with Rivers Alliance of Connecticut Small Grant Program.
