Inaugural Giorno & Harmon Basketball Tourney

The Inaugural Giorno & Harmon Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 15 and 16 at the Newtown Youth Academy.

The tournament is in honor of John Giorno, a “good friend” of Newtown basketball, who succumbed to cancer in 2002 and Kim Harmon, former sports editor at The Bee, who was lost to heart disease in December of 2007.

All proceeds will be distributed to the Giorno Scholarship Fund and the Harmon Family Fund. This event also represents the grand opening of the Newtown Youth Academy, a world class sports facility dedicated to all youth sports in Newtown.

Tournament competition is by age groups for both males and females (ranging from fourth grade through high school and adult). The format will be double elimination, so every team plays at least two games. Trophies are awarded for first and second place in each division. Each team should register four players. Prizes, including autographs and tickets to games will be raffled.

Participants may register on the day of the tournament, through the NYBA Website newtownyouthbasketball.org, or through the Newtown Recreation site: newtown-ct.gov/Pub lic_Documents/NewtownCT_Park/index.

All players receive a commemorative T-shirt. Cost is $90 for teams in grades 4-8 and $100 for teams in grades 9-12 as well as adults.
