NHS Boys Run To Seventh Place

By Andy Hutchison

BETHEL — After posting a 7-6 record during the regular season it was appropriate, one could argue, that the Newtown High School boys’ cross country team placed seventh in last Thursday’s South-West Conference Championship at Bethel High School.

Led by All-SWC First Team honoree David Meyer, who made the cut as the 12th finisher, Newtown finished with 138 points; New Milford, with 78, won its seventh straight title. Meyer finished the 5K course in a time of 17:36.84. First-place finisher Mike Levene of Joel Barlow ran the course in 16:25.36.

Newtown’s Tucker Grose was 21st in a time of 18:00.55 to earn All-SWC Second Team Accolades and Alex DiNoto finished 25th in 18:03.59. Austin Baldour was Newtown’s fourth finisher in 18:29.88 and Adam Shankman was fifth in 19:07.59. Andrew LaMarche and Matt Bobkowski rounded out Newtown’s seven participants.

“It was a solid meet,” NHS Coach Dave Foss said.

Foss, a former NHS runner himself, just missed earning First Team recognition, placing 13th in the old Western Connecticut Conference race in the 1990s, he recalled. Foss was happy for Meyer. “He has worked so hard,” the coach said.

“It feels good. This was my goal and I made it so I’m happy,” Meyer said.

Finishing seventh as a team was a little disappointing, Grose said, but he added that the season as a whole was enjoyable.

“It’s been great. It was tough and it was long, but we’ve got a great bunch of guys,” Grose said.

“I think we’ve continued to improve. The future bodes well,” Foss added.
