Rotary Volunteers Helped ‘Make A Difference’

It is “Nicer in Newtown,” at least along its shores, as a result of the work done recently by The Rotary Club of Newtown with the assistance of Boy Scouts from Troop 770.

October 4 was Rotary Make A Difference Day, a clean water project that was supported by more than 60 other Rotary Clubs in southern Connecticut. The goal of this project was the cleanup of streams, ponds, lakes, and beaches across the state.

In Newtown, more than 25 Rotarians and Scouts spent the day cleaning up trash along the shores of Lake Lillinonah, Lake Zoar, and the Pootatuck River. Rotarian Pat Caruso, who was chairman of the project, arranged through his company, Associated Refuse, for a number of dumpsters to contain all of the collected trash as well as its proper disposal.

“This project was an outstanding success,” said Mr Caruso. “Our volunteers collected well over ten cubic yards of trash along the shores in Newtown, really improving their appearance.”

Rotary District Governor Rick Benson of Westport conceived the project as a way to bring Rotary’s global goal of clean water to domestic and local levels. In addition to helping the poorest of the poor in the world, Rotary helps its own neighborhoods. Since the contents of all bodies of water in southern Connecticut eventually reach Long Island Sound, this project will benefit the recreational users of the Sound in addition to the fish, plant life, and wildlife that thrive in and around Connecticut’s waterways.

Newtown Rotary Club president Alan Clavette said, “This project was a wonderful way for Newtown Rotarians to complete a hands-on project that will have a significant positive impact on everyone who lives in Newtown. And having the Boy Scouts assist us made it that much better.”

The Rotary Club of Newtown meets every Monday at 6 pm at The Inn at Newtown. Anyone interested in learning more about the club can contact Mr Clavette at 426-2080.
