To the Editor:

As a 2001 graduate of Newtown High School and a classmate of Brandon Kirch, I would like to take a minute to offer some thoughts on young leaders. I think our history clearly shows that age is not a determining factor, and that a number of our state’s and country’s best leaders have been young. Personally, I am excited about the fact that one of our classmates is willing to serve as our next state representative.

Our current congressman, Chris Murphy, was 25 when he was elected to the House of Representatives. President Kennedy was 29 when he was elected for the first time. Ella Grasso, who eventually became governor, was 33 when she was elected to the state legislature. My point is that young politicians are effective leaders, that age really doesn’t make a difference. What matters is experience, and Chris Lyddy has the experience we need.

Chris Lyddy was born and raised in Newtown. Chris graduated from our public schools, and continues to serve us and better our community. He knows Newtown and he cares about Newtown, and he is running because he has Newtown’s best interest at heart. To me, it isn’t a title that’s important, it’s the person. Chris Lyddy is the person we need. Chris Lyddy has been in tune with the needs of the people of Newtown and is actually looking to broaden his knowledge base in this regard. Most recently he has been listening to them at their doors and on the phone, talking to thousands of them over the past few months. Chris Lyddy has taken the time to really learn about the issues that are important to Newtown voters. I know that Chris Lyddy will be the kind of leader we need in Hartford.

It is time for a change in the way we are represented, time we had someone fighting for Newtown. Chris Lyddy has offered the changes we need. With professionalism he possesses an energetic outlook and through this outlook is able to break away from politics as usual. His vitality and intuition will be great assets to the seat. I am confident that Chris Lyddy will continue to fight for the interests of the constituents in Newtown and am truly grateful he is willing to serve. I hope you will join me in voting for Chris Lyddy on November 4!

Sincerely,

Laura Howard
