Personal Information: James (Jim) A. Shpunt, Sr; 53; retired project manager, State of Connecticut; lifelong resident of Newtown; 37-year member of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co.; past board member of Newtown Youth Services and Board of Fire Commissioners; married to Sue, also a lifelong resident; two children, Jamie and Jessica, also Newtown residents; four brothers and one sister who live in town and are all lifelong residents.
What personal qualities do you have that you believe will benefit the Legislative Council and the community it serves? Lifelong resident of Newtown, Newtown High graduate. Worked at Fairfield Hills Hospital for 21 years; in charge of maintenance and repairs of all buildings. Many years of dedicated volunteer service to the community such as Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co., Youth Basketball, Newtown Soccer Club, Newtown Youth Services, Social Athletic Club (SAC), and a member of the Newtown Democratic Town Committee.
What do you believe is the councilâs biggest challenge over the next two years? Keeping the budget as low as possible; maintain the high standards of education in our school system; growth of Newtown, both residential and commercial; Fairfield Hills Hospital Plan.
What can the Legislative Council do to limit the growth of Newtownâs tax rate? Encourage commercial development; work with existing businesses to keep them in town; maintain a balanced growth in residential development.
