New Insights On High Blood Pressure And

Lung Diseases At Danbury Hospital

DANBURY –– “Off-The-Cuff: New Insights on High Blood Pressure” is the topic for discussion at the first of two Danbury Hospital Medical Town Meetings during the month of November. The program takes place Tuesday, November 18, from 7 to 8:30 pm, at the hospital”’s auditorium, 24 Hospital Avenue.

Featured speaker is Howard Garfinkel, MD, attending physician, Danbury Hospital Department of Medicine, chief of the section of nephrology and hypertension. He will address high blood pressure and associated risks for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. During the presentation, Dr Garfinkel also will highlight the facts related to the new high blood pressure guidelines that call for tighter controls that may drastically reduce the number of people who die each year from hypertension-related illnesses.

A second Danbury Hospital Medical Town Meeting, “Lung Diseases –– A Focus on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Lung Cancer,” will be conducted on Thursday, November 20.

Featured speakers are Douglas Kahn, DO, pulmonary diseases; Vincent Rella, MD, oncology/hematology; Noah Taylor, MD, radiation therapy; and Marianne Mitchell, an advanced practice registered nurse and “Quit Now” smoking cessation program instructor.

Joining the speakers during the question and answer portion of the program is Michael Walker, MD, thoracic/vascular surgeon and chairman of the Lung Cancer Tumor Board Committee,  Patrice Hough, manager of the Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital, will facilitate the evening program.

 They will discuss COPD and lung cancer from a pulmonary perspective, and also will address recent advances in the treatment of lung cancer through chemotherapy, multimodality therapy and radiation therapy. The program will be conducted from 7 to 8:30 pm in the hospital’s auditorium.              

Prior to the program and in observance of COPD Awareness Month, a free spirometrey screening for COPD will be conducted from 6 to 7 pm in the auditorium foyer. No RSVP required.

Ample time will be provided for audience questions. Medical Town Meetings are free and open to the public. Park free in the Blue visito’s parking lot, Hospital Avenue entrance.
