Newtown High School Scholarships Update
The Career Center advertises all scholarships that are received in the mail. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov, 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org, 800-876-7060 or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or call 703-276-0100.
American Legion National High School Oratorical Contest â For students under age 20 on the date of the Nation Contest presently enrolled in middle or high school. The scholarship may be used to attend any college or university in the United States. The First Round State winner and participant in the National Competition will receive a $1,500 award. The Final Round of the National Contest winners will receive: first place, $18,000; second place, $16,000; and third place, $14,000. The Local Legion Post determines the deadline. Ayn Rand Essay Contest â Two essay contests are open to high school student writers. A total of $62,000 in scholarships will be awarded. The $10,000 first prize is warded for an essay on The Fountainhead and open to juniors and seniors. The top prize for freshmen and sophomores is $2,000 for an essay on the novelette Anthem. Governorâs Coalition for Youth with Disabilities (GCYD) â This scholarship recognizes the outstanding achievements of high school seniors with disabilities by providing them with financial assistance to further their education and facilitate their career goals. Applications are available in the Career Center or www.gcyd.org. Deadline is January 9, 2004.
