Sex Offender Registry Seeks Current Information
The state Department of Public Safety is urging the public to contact the departmentâs Sex Offender Registry Unit if the registry is displaying inaccurate information on convicted sex offenders on its Internet website.
There currently are six offenders from Newtown who are listed on the sex offender registry. The registry contains more than 2,000 names.
The state operates the website to publicize the identities of convicted sex offenders, including their name, age, address, photograph, physical description, and the nature of their sex crime convictions.Â
If the information found on the sex offender registry website is in error, the public is asked to contact the Connecticut Department of Public Safety, Division of State Police Sex Offender Registry Unit at PO Box 2794, Middletown, CT 06457; 860-685-8060, or by e-mail at sex.offender.registry@po.state.ct.us.
On October 18, the sex offender registry passed the six-million mark in terms of Internet contacts or âhits,â which have been made by the public seeking information on convicts listed on the registry. Daily Internet traffic on the website ranges from 5,000 to 20,000 hits, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Convicts listed on the registry are required to notify the department within five days of changing their address, and are required to verify their address every 90 days. Registrants who fail to maintain registry requirements are subject to arrest.
The registry is available on the Internet at www.state.ct.us/dps.
