Grade 4
Newtown Nighthawks 24, Bridgeport Chargers 6: Bobby Haskins and Mitchell Savoca carried the ball well to set up four touchdowns. Justin Dunn ran for two scores on quarterback keepers. Haskins carried another over the line with a 28-yard run and Tom Cotton scored the final TD. In addition to the strong offense, Newtown had great defensive play. Scott Bauer recovered a fumble by the Chargers and Ryan Brello snagged an interception. Other defenders who played well were Joseph Accousti, Anthony Falbo, Mitchell Long, Ryan Marusi, Liam Garrison and Noah LaFerriere.
Grade 5
Newtown Gold 12, Bridgeport 6: Tim Mammen, Shaun Mccarthy and John Delrossi stepped up and had key blocks as Newtown moved the ball behind the efforts of Jared Pearson. Michael Doyle set up the first score behind blockers Jeremy Salaris, Michael Dutsar and Declan Sullivan with a 24 yard run. Ethan Carpenter ran a bootleg behind a perfect block from Nick Genovese to the two yard line and Jared Pearson ran the ball in for a touchdown. Charlie Fletcher, James Accousti, Kyle Martinez, JD Delrossi and Bryan Kiley pounded the Bridgeport offense to keep the game 6-6 at halftime. In the third quarter, Peyton Manning had a 26-yard run behind the blocking of Matt Davis, Ryan Shaw and Shaun McCarthy. The Newtown defensive players would not let up as Nick Genovese, Nick Bourgeois, Gabe Barrett, Steven Faxlanger, Michael Dutsar, Doyle, Pearson, Sean Saunders and Ethan Carpenter held the Bridgeport offense to minimal yardage. In the fourth quarter, Carpenter rolled right and threw a perfect pass to Jared Pearson for what would be the final touchdown of the game. With minutes left Kiley sacked the quarterback for an 11 yard loss. Defensive stars Fletcher, Matt Carino and Accousti made key tackles to end the game.
Grade 6
Newtown 36, Mahopac White 6: Forrest Speed, Jaret Devellis, Bubba Condon, Sugar Shane Quimby, Colton Smith and Nick Lotrecchiano combined for 319 yards on 29 carries to power Newtown to a 7-0 record. Jaret DeVellis scored on a 30 yard inside trap, Colton Smith and Forrest Speed scored on 61 and 36 yard blasts, Nick Lotrecchiano scored on a 22 yard run while Bubba Condon scored on a tough one yard run right up the gut. The last touchdown for the day was set up by a 30 yard punt return by Nolan Fisher. The aggressive Newton defense held Mahopac White to negative total yards through three quarters. The mighty Newtown defensive line, led by sacks from linesman Jake Lambert, Eric Street and Markus Elken, was strong. Defensive End Tim Krapf, in his customarily fashion, aggressively added pressure to the mix with two tackles in the backfield. Nick Lotrecchiano stripped the ball from a Mahopac running back and Colton Smith picked off a pass up the middle. The Nighthawk meet the 7-1 Bridgeport Chargers in the first round of the CVL Championship playoffs this Sunday at Hawley School.Â
