Rally For The Rights Of All

To the Editor:

As a resident of Newtown and a homeowner on Lake Zoar, I am appalled by the article in The Newtown Bee regarding the Lake Zoar Authority and the disabled water ski clinic, Leaps of Faith. I am embarrassed by the perception that it may be conveying that we are a community insensitive to the less fortunate, a community on the verge of committing a violation of human rights.

We should be proud that we are able to offer a community service that gives disabled skiers and their families an opportunity to participate and triumph in a sport that many able-bodied individuals cannot do. Imagine the feeling of achievement for the skiers and the feeling of pride for their families. I would like to think that is what we are all about.

Lake Zoar is a public lake and, as such, all individuals have the right to enjoy all the recreational activities the lake provides without a fee. Are disabled fishermen assessed a patrolling fee for participating in fishing tournaments? The same question can be asked of disabled boaters, jet skiers, campers, etc. using the lake.

The answer is No. Then why is a disabled water ski clinic expected to pay a patrolling fee?

The Lake Zoar Authority talks about liability. How about the liability of unmarked areas of the lake, some dangerous to an individual’s health and safety? One such area, appropriately called the sand bar, is a large area in the middle of the lake, knee-deep in water; and yes, unmarked. Pity the unaware boater. I believe this is far more dangerous to far more individuals than a well-organized, not-for-profit ski clinic for disabled individuals manned by workers trained to protect skiers, their families, and spectators.

As a community we should rally for equal rights for all individuals. Please join me in urging the Lake Zoar Authority to reconsider their position and provide patrolling services to Leaps of Faith without a fee. I challenge the authority members to take the time to volunteer at one of the clinics and open their hearts and feel the joy that comes from giving and touching the lives of those less fortunate.

Thank you.
