Residents Enlist In Marine Corps

Five Newtown residents have enlisted for the US Marine Corps, according to the Department of the Navy’s Fleet Hometown News Center.

Dustin Gill, a 2008 graduate of Newtown High School and son of Sandra P. and John T. Gill of Sandy Hook, recently enlisted in the US Marine Corps under the Delayed Entry Program at Marine Corps Recruiting Station Springfield in Chicopee, Mass.

Also enlisting in the program were Kyle B. Hensel, a 2008 graduate of Newtown High School and son of Karen L. Hensel of Newtown; Justin D. McGrath, a 2008 graduate of Newtown High School and son of Cheryl L. and Jeffrey D. McGrath of Newtown; Case B. Sherman, a 2005 graduate of Newtown High School and son of Marla C. and William J. Sherman of Newtown; and Matthew J. Smarrella, son of Cathy L. and James W. Smarrella of Sandy Hook.

The program allows recruits to enter the Marine Corps and take up to one year to complete prior commitments such as high school. Using recruiters as mentors, this program helps recruits ease into the transition from civilian to military life.
