Unnecessary Obstacles

To the Editor:

As a registered dietitian and exercise physiologist I spend my professional day educating my clients on the health and wellness benefits of nutrition and exercise. In my leisure time I am a water skier on Lake Zoar and a volunteer with the Leaps of Faith Disabled Waterski Club. I cannot begin to explain how rewarding it is to see these children and adults learning a new sport despite a disability. The enthusiasm with which they approach the sport, meet the challenge and excel is tremendous. Not only are they enjoying a sport they may never have had the opportunity to try, they are reaping the benefits of physical activity in a safe environment. Physical activity is important for all of us and these skiers deserve access to this sport. They are truly an inspiration to coach and watch.

To see unnecessary obstacles placed in the way, such as the challenge the club has faced due to the issue with the Lake Zoar Authority (LZA), is unwarranted to say the least. The club has had all the necessary permits in place and there have been no issues in the past. It would be a great disservice to the community should this unique program be sidelined due to the agenda of the LZA never mind the detrimental effect to these determined skiers.

With best regards,
