HUNTERDON COUNTY ANTIQUES FAIR ‘A SHOW THE WAY IT USED TO BE’ w/5 cuts

ak/gs set 11/1 #718090

RINGOES, N.J. — On September 23, 93 exhibitors arrived early to set-up at the Hunterdon County Fairground. All exhibits were under pavilions, so, even if the weather was inclement, there would be no effect on the exhibits. The weather, however, was wonderful all day.

With the aid of the sponsors (the Hunterdon County 4H Leaders Association) and the promoters, Ellen Katona and Bob Lutz, all exhibitors had their booths in order by the 10 am opening.

What an opening it was. The line of patrons was so long and was so persistent that it took 1½ hours to get the first wave through the admission gate. The actual count of patrons indicated that in the first hour more than 700 had entered the show.

Practically all dealers reported a phenomenal show with sales ranging from small, inexpensive items to furniture well into the thousands of dollars. Sales were across the board with every category and type of antique selling.

Ed Michinski reported selling ten pieces of furniture; Paul Dorman of Cottage Treasures nine pieces; Tom Peper of Lewisburg, Penn., sold two dry sinks, a table and assorted smalls; and Gordon and Normandie Schell of Galloway, N.J., sold several pieces of period furniture along with smalls. Many country painted pieces went out the door including cupboards, tap tables, benches, dry sinks, and other furniture items. Jewelry dealers reported strong sales throughout the day.

As a testament to the crowds, the food tent had to send out for more supplies.

The promoters, Ellen Katona and Bob Lutz, report that this show was like shows of old in terms of attendance and sales. They are planning next year’s show for September 21, and are looking into the possibility of adding a spring show to this venue.
