Making It Nicer In Newtown

To the Editor:

All drivers: If you see a line of cars following each other with their hazard lights blinking - it's a funeral. Please be respectful and do not try to break into the line, especially if you can see that others have. Even if you have a green light or it's your "turn." It is the "last turn" of the deceased, so show some respect.

Drivers in the funeral procession: Stay as close as possible to those in front of you in the line. Put on your headlights and hazard lights. Block intersections, drive through red lights and stop signs as directed by the funeral director. If provided, prominently display the placard given to you by the funeral director.

Funeral directors: Please provide the placards for the rear-view mirrors or windshield. From what I saw today, the blinking light thing isn't enough for many drivers. I don't know how much they cost, but can't believe it is much for a bulk buy. If you feel it is necessary to pass on the cost to the deceased's family, a small charge isn't going to make a big difference when they are already spending thousands for all the rest.

Please remember to respect the deceased any way you can.

Someday you'll be the one at the head of the line.
