Constance Hope Allen

Cherished By Family

Constance Hope (Purdy) Allen, 83, died October 28. She had been in the respectful and loving care of close family for the past two months. The staffs of the Torrington agencies of Valerie Manor and VNS of Connecticut Hospice were invaluable in this care and effort.

Mrs Allen was born September 3, 1924, in Greenwich, daughter of Edward A. and Helen A. (Lounsbury) Purdy, the last born of seven daughters. The family made its home in Sandy Hook near Lake Zoar.

On November 24, 1945, she married Sgt Albert Allen. They created a life together, both working and juggling the care of their two children. They lived most of their family life on Lake Lillinonah where Mrs Allen created beautiful flower gardens and enjoyed boating, fishing, and water skiing.

Her son, Gary E. Allen and his wife, Nancy (Wiles), Southbury; a daughter, Patricialee “Patty” Shuttleworth, Bath, Maine; grandsons, Patrick Hagan and Timothy Blount, Boston, and William “Billy” Allen, Southbury; and sisters, Betty Bailey, Cornwall Bridge and Mae Staudinger, Torrington, survive her.

Mrs Allen enjoyed most sports and was a big fan of the Red Sox and UConn Huskies girls’ basketball. She loved her home in Vermont, and her animals, but returned to Connecticut after the birth of her grandson, Billy.

According to her wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral. Interment of her ashes was in Zoar Cemetery, Sandy Hook, October 31. A celebration of her life followed at the Southbury home of her son.

Memorial donations may be made to VNS of Connecticut Hospice, 62 Commercial Boulevard, Torrington CT 06790, or Valerie Manor, 1360 Torringford Street, Torrington CT 06790.
