Parent Connection Slates Antibullying Program

The Newtown Rotary Club is sponsoring the next Newtown Parent Connection forum, “No Bullies Allowed,” featuring renowned speaker John Boiano, on Wednesday, November 8.

Mr Boiano will speak to students in grades three through eight at St Rose School during the day. He will address parents with children of all ages in his evening presentation from 7 to 9 at the Reed Intermediate School.

Bullying is an issue that can have devastating effects on children. Dorrie Carolan and Donna DeLuca, founders of the Parent Connection, state they are pleased to be able to offer education from an expert in the field on a topic that the community has requested.

St Rose School has dedicated a portion of these past two weeks to addressing the topic of cohesiveness and unity among all individuals. School principal Mary Maloney has asked teachers to incorporate antibullying lessons into the curriculum.

Mary Jo Bokuniewicz inspired her first graders to write personal pledges professing their desire for unity and displayed them prominently outside her classroom door. Mrs Maloney said that the school’s emphasis on this topic was triggered by Governor Jodi Rell’s declaration of an Antibullying Day in the State of Connecticut last week.

Mr Boiano will guide students through a series of interactive stories and scenarios that teach them practical and effective strategies to use in addressing meanness as it may occur in various forms.

“The assemblies inspire the students to recognize their personal responsibility in taking a constructive role in the solution and point out that each individual has the ability to affect change,” Mr Boiano states on his website.

The program empowers students by giving them the tools that can reduce acts of meanness in their own environments.

The Newtown Parent Connection invites all citizens of Newtown and surrounding communities to attend this program. For information on the Newtown Parent Connection, and to learn about upcoming events, visit its website, newtownparentconnection.org.
