Successful Bazaar At Senior Center

The main room of the Newtown Senior Center took on a festive appearance Friday and Saturday, October 20 and 21, when the Annual Harvest Bazaar celebrated the start of autumn and winter holidays. Knitted items, quilts, handcrafted purses and jewelry, ornaments, tote bags, and sundry other articles made by members of the Senior Center, as well as a full array of baked goods, offered shoppers plenty of choices for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and winter holiday shopping.

Most popular with customers at the Harvest Bazaar this year were the quilts and afghan blankets, said Senior Center Director Marilyn Place. “Baked goods were very popular, but I guess people in Newtown are still cooking,” she added, “because we sold out of aprons completely.” Anything holiday related moved particularly well, said Ms Place.

Friday’s rainy weather brought droves of shoppers to the bazaar, much to the delight of the members. This year, the Harvest Bazaar raised nearly $1,700, all of which benefits the Senior Center. The funds are used to purchase items such as additional chairs and tables for the center. Looking to the near future, Ms Place noted that additional furnishings will be required for the new addition, and that the center hopes to replace the present piano. “This money will be very helpful in those areas,” said Ms Place.
