Students Invited

To Experience Colonial Life

In the last 250 years there have been many changes in the ways people make their livings and furnish their homes. How do people today find out about what life was like in the past?

Students will have a chance to listen and learn at the historic Matthew Curtiss House-Museum on Friday, November 11 (Veterans’ Day so there is no school) when Newtown Historical Society presents “Colonial Life,” a one-hour hands-on program just for kids. The workshop, designed for children in grades kindergarten through third grade, starts at 11 am and takes place at the Curtiss House at 44 Main Street.

After a brief introductory discussion contrasting some of the differences between life in the colonial period and life in modern Connecticut, students will focus on the differences between making clothing long ago and buying clothing today. This will include carding and spinning wool, dressing in reproduction garments. and designing a quilt square to bring home.

After learning what chores were required of young people to help their colonial households function, children will also learn about colonial games and have an opportunity to play with replica toys.

Following the session light refreshments will be served.

This event is open to all appropriately aged students and is free of charge. Space is limited so registration is necessary. Register by calling the historical society at 426-5937.
