Where Is The Courage And Character?

To the Editor:

The figure for United States military deaths in Iraq reached 2,001, today. What a soul-wrenching tragedy, this whole story of Iraq. I also keep in mind the thousands of Iraqi citizens killed, more each day…the very ones trying to participate in a semblance of functioning civil society. Imagine what courage it takes to be a policeman! A judge! Even a cleric, if one’s position is moderate.

I feel our Administration, with its behind-the-scenes managers, is so venal. Our Congress is also, or at best flabby in expressing critical opposition. Where are statesmen of courage and character such as I recall from decades ago?

Our nation seems to be sinking ever deeper into debt, incompetence, and hypocrisy; moral rectitude has become a disposable commodity, and in its place we have the practice of radical ideology, and first priority given to the corporate bottom line.

Yours truly,

Polly Brody
