Katie Abromovitch canned a three-pointer to lift Team Trolle to a 45-43 win over Team Duncanson in opening night action in the Newtown Women’s Basketball League at The Gym at Newtown.

Holly Ferguson dropped in 22 points, grabbed 19 rebounds, made eight steals and one block to lead Trolle to the win. Abromovitch added 17 points, 16 rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Laura Cook and Stephanie Trolle combined for six points, eight rebounds and two steals while Caroline Ward had 11 rebounds, one block and one steal.

Joanne Duncanson and Lisa Schang each dropped in 17 points and combined for 22 rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks for Team Duncanson. Jennifer Zdziarski added seven points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

In other action, Jennifer Thomas popped in 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as The Gym at Newtown – which won only one game a year ago – defeated Team Powell, 61-45. Thomas added five blocks, four steals and two assists. Mel Darrah contributed 22 points, three steals, two blocks and two rebounds while Janet Duffey had a nice game with 15 points (including a three-pointer), two rebounds and three assists. Carolyn Schrieber pulled down 11 rebounds and chipped in with five points and two assists.

For Team Powell, Maura Keenan poured in 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds with five steals and a block. Colleen Ruiz chipped in with six points, two steals and 11 rebounds as Karen Powell, Peg Bowers and Michelle Smith each contributed four points while combining for 12 rebounds. Denise Passano and Jackie Candee pulled down a combined six rebounds and each had an assist and a steal.

In the only other action, Team Baggett earned a forfeit win over Newtown Mobil.

Next week, Team Powell and Team Trolle square off at 6:30 pm with Team Katrinak and The Gym at Newtown playing at 7:3o pm. The night will finish off at 8:30 pm with Team Baggett versus Team Duncanson.
