Occupation: My full-time job is running the company I started three years ago, Flagpole Software LLC. We design software for use by the life insurance industry. One year ago, I also became a partner in Pangea International Risk Management, a company that manages life and health insurance in the Caribbean. The offshore insurance market is amazing, due to the number of companies that are relocating.

“On the side,” I am the organist at Newtown Congregational Church, a job that I’ve had for nine years now. It’s a nice contrast. Computers and music are my two interests in life, and I’m lucky to be able to do both. I also play for weddings and funerals, and find they are all different and all interesting.

In addition, I have created a website for choirs that offers rehearsal and concert resources as well as individual voice parts. It’s by subscription, and you can access it at choraltutor.com.

How Long In Newtown: We moved here from Andover, a town east of Hartford, nine and a half years ago. I grew up in Hartford, and learned how to play the organ as a kid when I was just barely able to reach the pedals. I got into it because I was totally enamored with the sound.

Family: My wife Nancy is a cook. We owned a restaurant together in Hartford for seven years, called the Garden of Eating Restaurant, and we featured vegetarian and natural foods. The closest thing to it around here is the Sesame Seed in Danbury.

We have a daughter, Katie Rose, who is 16 and a junior at Newtown High School, and a son, Nathan, who is 12, and goes to Newtown Middle School. He’s in the seventh grade.

Hobbies: I have been a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox. Now that they’ve finally won their first World Series since 1918, I think the world is going to be a different place. Maybe the sun will rise in the West.

I like to cook and bake bread. I make my own mustard complete with labels and all. I’ve had to increase my batches every year, because people really like it.

Something unusual: When I was in high school in the early 1970s, I dabbled in writing service music for the organ. One piece that I wrote got into the Guinness Book of World Records for five years in a row because it was the longest written and performed work. It took 100 continuous hours to play all the way through.

Something else that is unusual, I was lucky enough to see Mark McGuire hit his 62nd home run.

Pets: Our dog is Neco Noir, and we have two cats named Piet — after the French Impressionist painter Piet Mondrian — and Sibelius —after Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.

Favorite Book: I enjoy reading Jon Krakauer’s books, like Into Thin Air, Into The Wild, and Under The Banner of Heaven, that I am reading now.

Favorite Vacation Spot: My wife is from Bemidji, Minn., and I like to go ice-fishing in northern Minnesota in January. I enjoy taking my son along with me now. Spring and fall, I love to go to Acadia National Park in Maine.

Why We Chose Newtown: I had taken a job in Westport and was commuting from Andover. That was a real hike, so we had to move and we chose Newtown because it felt rural, which we like. It seemed to have all the services and opportunities that we wanted. It’s been a great choice and we’ve never been sorry.

Personal Philosophy: Pay attention and do your best.
