Something In Common
Something In Common
To the Editor:
In the small town of Thurles, in County Tipperary, is the Cathedral of the Assumption. To the left of the altar is a black granite stone marking the tomb of Saint Mary Nolan. All saints may be called to the religious life, but they are human and need support and this often comes in the early stages of their lives. As a result, one common characteristic they share is the love and respect of their mother.
Newtown also had a Mary Nolan. She lived in a small white house on Route 302 near Dodgingtown. I had the opportunity to meet Mary several years ago. I recall a story she related at that time. Now Mary was a woman of very modest means, but at one time, she inherited a small sum of money. She could have spent the money on herself, but instead chose to take her elderly mother back to Ireland. Her mother was so thrilled at the prospect of finally returning to her birthplace. I wish everyone could have heard Maryâs voice and saw the love in her eyes as she spoke of their visit to the Irish countryside.
I donât know if Mary Nolan was a saint, but it would appear she had something in common with all of them and she certainly sets an example for all of us to follow.
Sincerely,
Mark Dennen
