Fore! ... Golfers Win Rock Ridge Memorial Tourney

Rock Ridge Country Club held its annual Rock Ridge Memorial Tournament recently. This is a 27-hole event for men and women, and is played in honor of the members who have passed away. Players compete in teams of two in three different formats. The first nine holes are played in a scramble format, the second nine holes are played in a pinehurst format, and the last nine holes are played in an alternate shot format.

After the scramble competition, Mike Spicci and Peter Wallace shot a 2 under par score of 33 to lead the Gross competition, while brothers Phil and AJ Cappelli shot a 7 under par score of 28 to lead the Net competition. In the ladies division, the team of Kara Foulk and Suzanne Spicci shot 5 under par to lead the Net competition.

After the scramble format, teams took to the course for the pinehurst format. Spicci and Wallace managed to hang onto the their lead in the men’s gross competition, while Len Calbo and Ed Sherrick stole the lead from the Cappelli brothers in the Net division. Calbo and Sherrick were three shots behind after nine holes, but shot 5 under in the pinehurst to take the lead by one stroke. In the ladies net competition, Kara Foulk and Suzanne Spicci shot even par to hold their lead going into the final 9 holes.

The alternate shot format is the most difficult format in the tournament. This format allows teams to make big moves up the leader board. In the men’s gross competition, John DuBraski and Mike Nathenson passed Spicci and Wallace to take home the championship. Calbo and Sherrick held onto their 18-hole lead to capture the net championship.

In the ladies division, Foulk and Spicci never looked back, leading the field through all 27 holes to take the championship. The winners will be at awards night on Saturday.
