Man Arrested For Theft Of 20 Candles

About 2:30 pm November 4, police received a report concerning the theft of 20 aromatic decorative candles from Joy’s Hallmark, a greeting card and gift shop at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street (Route 25), so they went there to investigate.

After receiving a description of the vehicle that the suspect was driving southward on Route 25, Newtown police contacted Monroe police to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

Monroe police spotted the suspect’s vehicle and stopped it in Trumbull, according to Newtown police Sergeant Christopher Vanghele.

Sgt Vahghele said that Anthony Olszewski, 41, of Waterbury had repeatedly entered the gift shop and illegally removed the decorative candles from the premises. The candles were enclosed inside glass jars.

Police estimated the value of the 20 stolen candles at approximately $600.

Police arrested Olszewski on charges of fourth-degree larceny and driving while under suspension, after which they held him on $1,500 bail for arraignment November 5 in Danbury Superior Court.

After reviewing records, police learned that Olszewski was wanted on warrants by Waterbury police and by Newington police.

The charges listed in those warrants include two counts of second-degree failure to appear in court, two counts of driving while under suspension, and one count each of possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, driving in the improper lane, failure to have automotive insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle, and a seat belt violation.
