Matthew Simms
Matthew is derived from the Hebrew name Matityahu, meaning "Gift of God."
With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved brother Matthew Bernard Simms, 54. He died peacefully at home on October 26, surrounded by his friends and family and his brother Paulo.
Matthew had an extraordinary ability for love and humor beyond that witnessed in any person.
Matthew was born on May 8, 1972, as a special gift from God to our family and all of our friends. Matthew had the special character of Downs Syndrome that allowed him to bring daily joy to our lives.
Life is often measured as a single day and how one lives one day is how one lives their life. In every day of Matthew’s life, he was a force of nature — loving, playful and unforgettable. He never forgot a person, he always hugged first, he always smiled and laughed with such ease. He is the definition of empathy and selflessness. By his daily actions throughout his long life, he only brought love to us all.
He has been the loving uncle to many wonderful nieces and nephews and the youngest brother of Warren and Kerry Hall, Mark and Diane Simms, Patrick and Jennifer Simms, and Katie Simms. and is with our parents Bernard and Katherine Simms. Matthew lived within the Sweetcake house community with incredibly supportive friends and a true caring family and for all of them we are thankful.
A funeral mass is planned for Matthew with family and friends in Charleston South Carolina at Saint Theresa the Little Flower Catholic Church in Summerville, South Carolina, on November 20, at 11:00 am. There will be a private interment at a later date.
Matthew was a lifelong participant in the Special Olympics (https://support.SpecialOlympics.org) and he was loved and supported throughout his life by the caring people at Ability Beyond (https://abilitybeyond.org/donate/).
The family asks that donations be made to these wonderful organizations in his memory.
