Used A Mobile While Driving

Newtown Police report Thomas Wells, 50, of Redding, operating a 1998 Saturn SL, was traveling southbound on Hattertown Road on October 24. He ran off the roadway to the right and in the process struck the guardrail on the side of the roadway. Wells’s vehicle was towed from the scene by G-Force LLC Towing.

No injuries were reported.

Wells was issued an infraction for violation of operating a motor vehicle while using a handheld mobile device and a verbal warning for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Police Seeking Catalytic Converter Thief

Newtown Police report that in the overnight hours of October 25, two work vans had catalytic converters stolen from them. The work vans were parked in the commercial property of Black Swan Fireside Hearth & Home, 182 South Main Street.

Collided In Intersection

Newtown Police report Lauren Freeman, 42, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2021 Honda Pilot EXL, was traveling westbound on School House Hill Road on October 28, and stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with Main Street. Catherine Donoghue, 59, of Danbury, was traveling southbound on Main Street when she stopped at the intersection of School House Hill Road.

Both vehicles began making left hand turns when they collided.

No injuries were reported.

Freeman received a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at a stop sign.

Four-Car Collision

Newtown Police report Robert Mascher, 18, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2003 Honda Civic LX, traveling northbound on South Main Street on October 29, failed to stop before his car collided with the rear vehicle in a line of cars stopped in traffic. The front end of his vehicle struck the rear end of a 2017 Honda Pilot Elite operated by Lindsay Bruno, 46, of Newtown, which was pushed into the rear of a 2008 Honda CR-V EX-I operated by Manouche Charles, 32, of Danbury, which in turn was pushed into the rear end of a 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid LI operated by Heather Rancourt, 43, of Monroe, who had been waiting to make a left turn into the driveway of 94 South Main Street.

The passenger of Mascher’s vehicle was transported to Danbury Hospital for a possible leg injury. Mascher’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

Mascher was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and causing a crash.

Misuse Of 911

Newtown Police report Joseph Kenyhercz, 38, of Bridgeport, was arrested October 29 on the charges of interfering with an officer/resisting arrest, making a false report concerning an injury or death, misuse of emergency 911, disorderly conduct, and first-degree reckless endangerment.

He was held on a $10,000 bond with a court date the same day.

Arrested For Assault

Newtown Police report David Sclaudone, 51, of Newtown, was arrested October 31 on the charges of second-degree breach of peace, creating a public disturbance, third-degree assault, and third-degree assault with physical injury.

He was released on a $5,000 bond with a court date of November 16.

Arrested For Drunk Driving

Newtown Police report Joanne Cukrovany, 42, of Bridgeport, was arrested October 31 on the charge of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

She was released on a $100 bond with a court date of November 16.

Rear Ended On Highway

Connecticut State Police report Destinee Martori, 27, of Cliffside Park, N.J., operating a 2016 Jeep Cherokee, was traveling in the left lane of three on Interstate 84 East approximately three-tenths of a mile west of Exit 11 in Newtown, on November 1. Brian Lees, 69, of Framingham, Mass., was traveling in the left lane directly behind Martori’s vehicle. Martori’s vehicle slowed for traffic ahead, and Lees’ vehicle was unable to stop in time and the front end of his vehicle collided with the rear end of Martori’s vehicle.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Modzelewski’s Towing. No injuries were reported. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the crash.

Lees was issued an infraction for following too close resulting in a motor vehicle accident.

Rear-Ended Stopped Vehicle

Newtown Police report David Pereira, 23, of Orange, operating a 2015 Ford Transit, was traveling eastbound on Mt Pleasant Road on November 1 behind a 2018 Honda HR-V EX operated by Monika Wieleba, 45, of Newtown. Wielaba's vehicle stopped in traffic waiting to turn left onto Academy Lane. Pereira's vehicle turned to the right in a failed attempt to avoid contact with Wielaba's vehicle and the front bumper of his vehicle struck the rear bumper of Wielaba's vehicle.

There was minor damage to both bumpers.

Pereira was given a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Hit Car Stopped For Oil Delivery Truck

Newtown Police report Bryce Leitschuh, 21, of Troy, Ill., operating a 2003 Ford Ranger, was traveling northbound on Currituck Road on November 1, behind a 2019 Acura RDX operated by Patricia Groeschner, 75, of New Milford. Groeschner's vehicle stopped for an oil delivery truck that was stopped in the roadway ahead. The front bumper of Leitschuh's vehicle made contact with the rear bumper of Groeshner's vehicle.

Leitschuh stated he was distracted by a pedestrian in a driveway to the right side of Currituck Road.

No injuries were reported.

Leitschuh was given a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Split Telephone Pole In Half

Newtown Police report Matthew Mislap, 37, of Bethel, operating a 2012 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium, was traveling eastbound on Plumtree Road on November 1. While negotiating a left hand curve in the road, Mislap's vehicle left the eastbound lane and traveled onto the eastbound shoulder of the road, striking a Frontier utility pole, splitting it in half. The vehicle then traveled back into the eastbound lane, facing southbound.

Bethel EMS treated and released Mislap at the scene, no injuries were reported.

Mislap was issued an infraction for restricted turn.
