John J. Straniti Jr (80) of Newtown passed away on November 9, 2024, after an incredible fight against complications from blood disease.

John was born to Josephine and John Straniti Sr on September 19, 1944, in Norwalk. He loved nothing more than conversation and enjoying life with his family and innumerable friends. He was a sales professional for Vallerie’s Transportation for 30 years, followed by working with people he loved at Mona Lisa’s Restaurant.

John proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1962 to 1966 on the USS Shangri-La, where he was responsible for the oversight of F-8 Crusader fighter jets and ultimately many lives. His bravery on a flight deck and unique love for connecting with people shone never more brightly than through his connections with his children and family.

John’s ability to share a joke, a random act of kindness, or a rock n’ roll classic to brighten anyone’s day was unparalleled.

John’s light is carried on by his wife of 56 years, Carol; their children John III, Albert and his partner Irene, Brian and his partner Jennifer, and Mary and her partner Chris; along with his beloved grandchildren Isabella, Aureanna, Ellis, and Matilda.

To honor John’s life, calling hours will be held at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown, on Friday, November 15, from 4 to 7 pm. The funeral service will be held at 10 am the following morning, November 16, at Honan Funeral Home, followed by brief words and Military Honors at Resurrection Cemetery, 208 South Main Street in Newtown.
