Heroes & Heroines: Capt. James Cook
Heroes & Heroines: Capt. James Cook
BRIDGEWATER â Patricia Carr of New Milford will present the next program of Burnham Libraryâs âHeroes and Heroinesâ series this weekend.
The program will be about Captain James Cook, based on a portrait by Nathaniel Dance in 1776, the year in which Cook set off on his last journey.
âWhen Mrs James Cook first saw the portrait of Captain Cook by Nathaniel Dance, she was asked what she thought of it,â said Ms Carr.
âShe hesitated and then said, âItâs good, but Mr Dance has made Mr Cook look stern, and Mr Cook is never stern.
âAlthough all the sailors who sailed under Captain Cook adored him, they might have some reservations about this observation!â Ms Carr laughed.
The program will be on Sunday, November 21, at 3 pm. The Friends of the Burnham Library are sponsoring this series, which is free and open to anyone who wishes to attend. Refreshments will be served.
Call the library for additional information at 860-354-6937. Burnham Library is at 62 Main Street (Route 133) in Bridgewater.
