Newtown High School Lists Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.

If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060, or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

Ted Martocchio Scholarship (Building and Trades Union) — One $1,000 scholarship for a high school senior who has been accepted to attend full-time at one of the Connecticut State Universities (CCSU, ECSU, SCSU, or WCSU). Eligible students must have a minimum GPA of 2.75, demonstrate leadership or examples of volunteer work, be a resident of Connecticut and be a child of a Building and Trades Union member. Students with diverse interests will have preference and no specific major is required. Financial need must be demonstrated. The application deadline is April 29. Pratt and Whitney Science and Technology Scholarship — One $1,000 scholarship to Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) will be awarded to a high school senior. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have demonstrated excellence in science and technology while in high school, be a Connecticut resident, and have an acceptance to SCSU for full-time study commencing in the fall 2005. Financial need must be demonstrated. The application deadline is April 29. Information is available at the Career Center and www.csusystemfoundation.org.

T. Clark Hull Public Service Scholarship — One $500 scholarship to Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) will be awarded to a high school senior. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, demonstrated leadership and commitment to service to their high school and/or community, be a resident of Connecticut, and have an acceptance to WCSU for fall 2005. Financial need must be demonstrated. The application deadline is April 29. Information is available at the Career Center and www.csusystemfoundation.org.

 RMHC Scholarships — The Ronald McDonald House Charities offers three scholarship programs for minority high school seniors. The RMHC/African American Future Achievers Scholarship Program is for students of African American heritage, the RMHC Asia Scholarship Program is for students of Asian heritage, and the RMHC/HACER Scholarship Program is for students from Hispanic backgrounds. Students must be eligible to attend a two- or four-year college full-time. Award recipients may receive a minimum of $1,000 although amounts may vary by local program areas. Detailed information is available at www.rmhc.org. The submission deadline for all scholarships is February 15. The Career Center has information and applications.

Ayn Rand Essay Contest — Two national essay contests are open to high school student writers. At least $30,000 in scholarships will be awarded. A $10,000 first prize is awarded for an essay on The Fountainhead and is open to eleventh and twelfth graders. The top prize for ninth and tenth graders is $2,000 for an essay on the novelette Anthem. Essay submissions are due by April 15 and March 18, respectively. Essay topics and rules are available in the Career Center or at www.aynrand.org.

Braindance Awards for Student Research — One $1,000 prize will be awarded by the Institute of Living, Hartford, for the best research project submitted by a high school student. Research projects, scientific essays, or reviews on several themes related to the brain will be considered. One runner-up prize of $500 and a second prize of $100 will be awarded. The submission deadline is January 30. Information is available in the Career Center.

AFS Awards for Excellence Scholarships — This prestigious merit scholarship program recognizes and rewards outstanding high school students who demonstrate leadership, service to their community and strong academic achievement by making it possible for them to study abroad. AFS will award $200,000 in scholarships to students to travel abroad in the summer 2005 or winter 2006. Interested students must be nominated by a teacher or guidance counselor. Information and forms are available in the Career Center and must be returned directly to Career Center by December 1 to participate in the nomination process.

National Peace Essay Contest — Sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace for students in grades nine through twelve. “Transitions to Democracy” is the essay topic. First place State winners will receive scholarships of $1,000 and will compete for a National Award of $2,500, $5,000, and $10,000. First place State winners will also be invited to attend an all-expense paid awards program in Washington, D.C. Detailed information is available at www.usip.org or in the Career Center. Submissions must be postmarked by February 2.

AYUSA Scholarships — AYUSA, a national nonprofit student exchange organization, has several scholarships available for high school students interested in studying abroad. The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship is for Germany and the Japan Youth Scholarship is for Japan. Full details are available at www.ayusa.org/study. The application deadlines are December 16 and December 1, respectively. A Youth Leadership Scholarship is also available. Information is in the Career Center.
