Occupation: I am a chiropractic physician and owner of a group practice, the Physical Medicine & Wellness Center located at 24 Glen Road in Sandy Hook. When I got my degree, I was part of the second-ever graduating class of a new program in chiropractic medicine at the University of Bridgeport. Now I am going on my third year working in this wonderful, historic 150-year-old building. It used to be the home and office of Dr George Kyle, a longtime, well-known Newtown family doctor who made house calls. I have to say, there are really good vibrations in this place.

How Long In Newtown: I’ve worked in Newtown and lived in Monroe since 1998, having lived briefly before that in New Haven and for much longer in Milford. I grew up in New Hampshire and in Massachusetts along the North Shore in a town called Newburyport.

Family: My husband is Dr Christopher Sova, a chiropractic physician also working at the Physical Medicine & Wellness Center. He is an associate with Urgent Health Care Clinic in Norwalk. Our son Ted, 17, is a junior at Masuk. My sister Neci Marr lives in Newtown and my sister Shelly lives in Monroe. The other three siblings are brothers who live in Costa Del Sol, Spain.

More Than A Hobby: I’ve been riding horses since I was 6 years old. As a child, I always belonged to the local pony club and I have kept on riding all my life. Now, I am going on my third year as president of the Newtown Bridle Lands Association (NBLA). I heard about them in 1998 during the brief time I had my office at the Newtown Health And Fitness Club on Commerce Road. The NBLA has 147 members and our board is outstanding. There are some huge events we plan every year for the tri-state area. They include the Frost on the Pumpkin hunter pace, the Spring Into Summer hunter pace, and a country dance planned for spring. Our club is a model for the state, and I believe it could be a model for the entire country because we keep informed about what is going on locally. We go to Planning and Zoning Commission meetings to learn about easements, and we attend Open Space Task Force meetings. We work for preservation of the land.

Incidentally, since becoming a chiropractic physician I have realized how important posture is to a rider, and that riding is really good for the back. The way you sit on your horse directly affects the way the horse responds. For example, if a riding friend says she is having trouble making the horse go left over a jump, I’ll tell her to get off the horse and I work on her back. Then she gets on again and, right away, it seems to help.

Pets: We have an English springer spaniel named Freckles, aged 10 years. I have a thoroughbred gelding named Colonial Sea, who is a Breeders Cup horse. I ride five or six days a week, and right now I’m training in third level dressage at Kettledrum Farm in Southbury. It’s really hard work, but I just love it. Before that I was hunting and jumping.

Favorite Book, TV Show, Movie: I read a lot. I am constantly reading technical books in my field. The last novel I read is something I reread by John Steinbeck called East of Eden. What a brilliant book. I’m rereading the classics now –– not just current popular fiction like those Dan Brown books.

As for TV, I liked the show about the Boston lawyers starring William Shatner. And my favorite movie is Jaws the First. We love to watch it.

Vacation Spot: Maine, and ocean beaches.

Organizations: I am a member of the Business and Professional Women of Newtown, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Most Vivid Memory About Newtown: Riding in the fall through fields and meadows and seeing all the beautiful trees in full color. The weather is a bit chilly, the horse is feeling great, and everything smells so wonderful while we’re clippity-clopping along.

I also loved walking through The Pleasance after the first snow last year. It was so lovely.

Personal Philosophy: One overriding philosophy is never, ever give up! Be brave. Fear of failure or fear of the unknown can be such a deterrent to positive action. We need to recognize our fear, embrace it, and then move beyond it. In some ways, fear can actually be very motivating. When your heart is beating fast and you don’t know what is going to happen the very next second, you know you’re alive. You are experiencing the full gamut of emotions. Riding and sailing are both like that.
