Advent Lessons And Carols Service At Trinity This Weekend

Trinity Episcopal Church will offer its annual Advent Lessons and Carols service on Sunday, December 3, at 2 pm. The service is free and open to all. It is being presented in with the 2006 Newtown Holiday Festival.

The service of “Lessons and Carols”  first began in Kings College, Cambridge, in England for the university community back in 1918. The wonderful tradition, moreover, has been duplicated in cathedrals and churches throughout America.

The service at Trinity will consist of Advent scripture readings beginning with Old Testament prophecies and concluding with the Gospel. The readings, proclaimed by various members of the Trinity community, will be interspersed with carols performed by the Adult Choir and Trinity Choristers including works of Benjamin Britten, Boris Ord, Palestrina and others.

All will be invited to join in singing familiar tunes such as “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and “Lo, he comes with clouds descending.”

The Trinity Choristers is a growing and vibrant 19-voice choir of boys and girls from Newtown and surrounding communities, under the auspice of the Royal School of Church Music. The Choristers and Adult choir are both led by choirmaster Fiona Smith Sutherland, who has trained hundreds of boys and girls in choral singing in Westchester and lower Fairfield county.

For more information contact Ms Sutherland at 426-9070 or MusicMinister@TrinityNewtownCT.org.
