The National Weather Service (NWS) continues to monitor a large winter storm that is expected to reach the Northeast/southern New England states by late Sunday, December 1. Organizers of events effected by the weather are invited to contact The Newtown Bee to share their change of plans. Businesses planning to close early today or open late Monday and/or Tuesday, as the inclement weather continues, are also invited to send us that information to be shared on our website and through social media.

Newtown is under a NWS Winter Storm Warning, which went into effect at 7 am Sunday. The warning will remain active until 7 am Tuesday, December 3.

Snow is expected to arrive in the area before 3 pm, and then change into a snow-sleet mix before becoming sleet around 4 pm. Chance of precipitation is 100%, according to the weather service.

Rain, freezing rain and sleet will continue for the overnight hours, and then into Monday morning. Snow and freezing rain and expected to continue until early afternoon Monday, December 2, before changing to snow by mid afternoon.

Although precipitation is forecast for nearly 48 hours, the weather service as of Sunday morning is saying the total accumulation will be less than a foot on the ground

Daytime snow and sleet accumulation for Sunday is only 1-3 inches, and less than an inch will be added to that for the Sunday-Monday overnight.

Monday will be when the larger accumulation gathers, according to the weather service.

“Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible,” is the forecast as of Sunday morning, with “New accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible” for the Monday overnight.

Tuesday will have a 20% chance of snow before 1 pm. Skies will be cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 36.
